Spring Racing Trends with Jemma Mrdak

I have been a fan of Jemma MrDak, creator and owner of A Stylish Moment, since before I had begun my own blog Tailored Talk.

Jemma is a beacon of style and inspiration for women everywhere. Not only is she a fashionista and up to date on all the latest looks from the runways, Jemma is a young business woman, entrepreneur and qualified personal trainer.

In the past Jemma has been a Judge for Fashions on The Field at Thoroughbred Park Canberra , and collaborated with Australian fashion brands known for their Spring Racing looks such as Review.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Jemma on all things Spring Racing…

What women’s wear trends do you expect to see at this year’s spring racing?

I think we are going to see a lot of bold statements for this years spring racing carnival. A lot of eccentric prints, cuts, and colours especially for Melbourne Cup day. I’m also thinking we’ll see a lot of high necklines, and mid length, a-line style cuts for dresses.
When it comes to headpieces – we’re either going to see some really cute understated pieces that flow perfectly for the outfit, or we’ll see some really out there ones which become the focal point for the look!

Is there a must have accessory for women this spring racing season?

A matching clutch, headpiece and jewellery are all must haves for any race day and are necessary for tying together any look.

Thousands of people attend race days every year across the country. What do you recommend to make an outfit unique and stand out from the crowd?

Try not to over do it – be tasteful and selective with what you wear and always remember that less is more when it comes to race day!

As a judge for Fashions on the Field in the past, what do you look for in a winning outfit?

When judging for FOTF, I always look for someone that has the whole package. This means they have a dress or outfit that fits the judging criteria, that is in the colours and tones appropriate for the season, and that its well fitted to the wearer. I also look to ensure that everything else is matching and the entire look flows.

The winning outfit would need to have matching shoes, bag, (sometime gloves), headpiece and other accessories – and the look needs to be streamlined.

Putting together an outfit for race day can be an expensive venture. Have you got any tips up your sleeve for girls on a budget that still want to look a million bucks on race day?

The earlier you start planning for a race day, the more time you have to find bargains and pieces that you love.
When looking for an outfit, look to either hire it from a rental store (there are some amazing and affordable styles available for over half the price you would pay to purchase it). Also look towards your local vintage or thrift store, as you may find either a great dress or accessories to match your look.

What are your go–to brands for a race day dress? Do you have a favorite at the moment?

At the moment I’m really loving Thurley, Nicola Finetti, and Rebecca Vallance.

Which Australian celebrities do you stalk on social media for their killer outfits during spring racing season?

Oooooh Rebecca Judd and Nadia Bartel are always ladies that I look to for spring racing style inspiration!

What will you be wearing come race day?

Definitely something bold and bright!
